It’s a good week for renewable energy around the globe, with the world’s first algae-powered building opening in Germany, and the official opening of the largest wind farm in the southern hemisphere. Now, France is getting in on the action, with construction officially beginning on the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, by Swiss design firm Herzog & de Meuron.
The project consists of three parts: the stadium bowl, including the sports field and the seating; the concourse; and the aesthetic look of the stadium. Located in the Bordeaux Lac region on the banks of the Garonne in the city’s north, the stadium will be able to hold up to 42,000 spectators.
Herzog & de Meuron — which also designed the “bird’s nest” National Stadium for the Beijing 2008 Olympics — has designed the building to be elegantly light, with a rectangular roof sloping inward, supported by thin white poles.
Meanwhile, the nearby car park will be shaded from the element by a system of solar photovoltaic panels, which are to power the entire stadium. A solar plant on location will convert solar energy to electricity. The overall cost of the stadium is estimated to be around $223 million.
After the opening in 2015, the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux will host one of the 2016 Union of European Football Associations‘ European Football Championship matches.
First building powered by algae
There’s long been speculation and research about algae’s potential as a power source. The fast-growing plants waste three-quarters of the sunlight they absorb, so what if that energy could be captured and converted?
That’s the premise behind BIQ House, designed by architectural firm Splitterwerk. It’s a new algae-powered building that’s opening on April 25 as part of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in Hamburg, Germany. The building’s east and south facades are covered in a system of louvres. Filled with microalgae, these louvres form 200 square meters of panels to power the building.
Each of the 129 approximately 8×2-foot panels form a sort of greenhouse environment for the algae, continuously supplied with liquid nutrients and carbon dioxide via a circuit through the facades. With the addition of sunlight, the algae is expected to proliferate, performing a secondary function of providing shade for the building.
When the algae has grown, it will be harvested and transferred to BIQ’s technical room. There, it will be fermented and converted into the biogas that will power the apartment building, producing up to five times as much biomass per hectare as land plants.
Splitterwerk is hoping the building will be able to run on nothing but renewable energy. As the first of its kind, BIQ House will also be a subject of study into how well algae can realistically serve as a source of energy.
